The Rainbow Plantation B & B: Upcountry Hawaii, Adventure!

[Travel]

Upcountry Adventure

After the crazy tourist crush in Kailua-Kona, how would you feel about staying a few days in a different type of setting altogether?  Being the brave soul that I am, I decided to try an old macadamia nut plantation that has been reborn as a bed and breakfast.  Unique?  The Rainbow Plantation B&B comes complete with wild and domestic chickens, and a peacock or two, to boot!  Although geckos abound, (so cute!) there are no snakes on the island, so this makes the Big Island's upcountry, my kind of jungle!

The plantation is situated about 20 minutes south of downtown Kailua-Kona on the Mamalahoa Highway.  There are several accommodation choices including a separate cottage and "The Boat," which we chose.  Yes, it's actually a boat that was turned into a suite with sitting room and a bedroom with two double beds.

Guests are served breakfast and are welcome to cook their other meals in the fully-outfitted, outdoor, "Jungle Kitchen."  Half the fun of staying on the plantation is cooking in the outdoor kitchen.  Guests come from all over the world to stay at the plantation so book early to ensure accommodations.

The more "outdoorsy" ambience of this place is not for everyone, so if you want 5-star luxury with hot and cold running maid service, don't stay here.  This is a place for the more adventurous spirit--the person who wants to experience something unique and more of what might expect that real, old Hawaii, might have encompassed. If you're bored with the same old hotel or condo experience, and up for something new, The Rainbow Plantation might be for you!

The owner, Christian, will be closing for a few months after high-season in order to upgrade the rooms and work on restoring more of the Plantation's gardens.  Christian has only owned the B&B for about 9 months now, and plans are in the works to bring The Rainbow Plantation to an even more lush, lovely state.

The little refurbished "Boat" room on the Rainbow Plantation. Very sweet & comfy room with an ocean view to die for!
